Get a Jitsi Meeting Transcript Without a Bot
ScreenApp has no bot for Jitsi. Its meeting bot for Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, so a calendar-scheduled Jitsi call has nothing to auto-join the way a Zoom or Teams call does. What works instead is recording the call yourself and letting ScreenApp turn that recording into a transcript with AI notes.
The Chrome extension that records tab, screen, mic and camera before you open your Jitsi link, so the recording captures the tab as the call happens. If you would rather not install anything, use any screen recorder and upload the file afterward, or upload a Jitsi recording you already made. Either way, other participants see the same call they would without a recording tool: nothing joins as a visible attendee.
What you get back:
- A transcript with speaker identification
- AI notes: action items with an owner and deadline, and decisions listed separately
- chapters with timestamps, so you can jump to the part of the call you need
- AI chat with any recording, so you can ask a question instead of re-reading the transcript
- Export as PDF, DOCX, TXT, SRT and VTT
- Free plan: 2 transcriptions of recordings up to 45 minutes each
How to Record and Transcribe a Jitsi Meeting
- Open the extension before you join: Install the Chrome extension that records tab, screen, mic and camera and start it before you open your Jitsi meeting link. Nothing joins the call as a participant.
- Run the call as normal: Talk through the meeting the way you always do. If you already have a Jitsi recording from the platform’s own recording feature or another app, skip straight to uploading it.
- Read the transcript and notes: A few minutes after the call ends, the transcript and AI notes are ready. Search the transcript or ask a question about the meeting instead of replaying it.
Accuracy depends on the audio each participant sends, so a call with several people talking over each other or a poor connection will have more gaps than a clear one-on-one. See how we measure accuracy.
Jitsi Meeting Notetaker vs Other Apps
None of the major meeting assistants send a bot into Jitsi. Otter.ai’s meeting agent covers Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet; Fireflies.ai’s calendar bot covers Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. For a Jitsi call, all of them fall back to a bot-free recorder, the same category ScreenApp is built around.
| Feature | ScreenApp | Otter.ai | Fireflies.ai | Notta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bot-free recording for Jitsi | Chrome extension that records tab, screen, mic and camera | desktop app records without a bot joining the call | Chrome extension recording without the Fireflies bot | desktop app, browser extension, or mobile app record without a bot joining the call |
| Free tier | 2 transcriptions, up to 45 min each | 300 min/month | 400 min storage, 20 AI credits/month | 120 min/month, 3 min/conversation |
| Action items | action items with an owner and deadline, and decisions listed separately | Included, automatically assigned | Included | AI Notes add-on (summaries and action items, uses AI Credits) |

- vs Otter.ai: Otter’s bot only joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, so a Jitsi call needs its desktop app records without a bot joining the call instead. Its free plan caps you at 300 minutes a month in 6 languages; ScreenApp’s free plan is 2 transcriptions of recordings up to 45 minutes each in 100+ languages.
- vs Fireflies.ai: Fireflies’ calendar bot is built for Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, not Jitsi. Its own Chrome extension recording without the Fireflies bot covers the gap, similar to ScreenApp’s extension. Fireflies’ free plan gives 400 minutes of storage and 20 AI credits a month.
- vs Notta: Notta’s desktop app, browser extension, or mobile app record without a bot joining the call, which also works for Jitsi. Its free plan is 120 minutes a month, capped at 3 minutes per conversation, and Pro is $8.17 a month billed annually.
Who Uses a Jitsi Meeting Notetaker
Open-source and privacy-focused teams who chose Jitsi because it is self-hostable and does not require an account still want a transcript afterward, without adding a third-party bot to the call.
Remote teams on a self-hosted Jitsi instance run standups and planning calls on infrastructure they control, then get the same transcript and AI notes they would from a hosted platform.
Consultants and support staff who meet clients on Jitsi because the client does not need to sign up for anything keep a private record of the call without a bot appearing as a named participant.
Researchers and interviewers using Jitsi for its no-account access transcribe interviews locally rather than sending the audio to a bot’s cloud service mid-call.
Community moderators and educators running office hours or study sessions on Jitsi turn the session into a searchable transcript that participants can review afterward.
