Speak Instead of Type, in Any App
Most people who search for a voice input app are looking for the built-in dictation on their phone: Android’s keyboard microphone or the iOS Dictation button. Those are free, already installed, and the right answer for typing a text message or a search query on a phone.
ScreenApp’s voice input app is a different tool for a different moment: a hotkey on your Mac or Windows desktop. Hold it, talk, release it, and the text lands wherever your cursor was, whether that is Word, an email, a Slack thread, or a terminal. hold a hotkey to dictate, then release it and the transcript lands in whatever app has focus. Away from the desktop, ScreenApp’s iOS and Android apps record a call or a note and hand you a transcript afterward instead.
What you get on the desktop:
- Text inserted into whatever Mac or Windows app has focus, not just one input box
- Fast returns the transcript exactly as spoken; Best removes filler words and fixes punctuation with an AI pass; Answer treats what you said as a question and inserts the AI's answer instead
- Your own vocabulary list for names, jargon, and terms you use often
- Voice input in any of 100+ languages
- included on every plan, with no separate word limit
How Voice Input Works on the Desktop
- Hold the hotkey: Press and hold the voice input key on the Mac or Windows app, wherever you are typing.
- Talk at a normal pace: Speak as you would to a colleague, pausing and correcting yourself if you need to. Release the key when you are done.
- Read the result: The transcript, or the AI-cleaned version of it in Best mode, appears where your cursor was. Add a name or term to your vocabulary once and later sessions use it.
Accuracy depends on your microphone and the noise around you. A quiet room with a laptop or headset mic gives the cleanest text. See how we measure accuracy.

- vs Wispr Flow: Wispr Flow also covers Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, so it currently reaches phone keyboards where ScreenApp’s voice input does not; ScreenApp’s mobile app records and transcribes instead of typing live. Wispr’s free plan caps you at 2,000 on desktop and 1,000 on iPhone, where included on every plan, with no separate word limit.
- vs Apple Dictation: Free, built in to macOS and iOS, and it does not time out mid-sentence, it only stops after 30 seconds of silence. It has no filler word removal and no custom vocabulary, and it works only on Apple hardware.
- vs Google Docs voice typing: Works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari and covers 100+ languages, but only inside a Google Docs or Slides tab, not across every application the way ScreenApp’s hotkey does.
- vs Dragon: no current public price page; Nuance's Dragon for Individuals and Dragon Professional pages redirect to Microsoft's health solutions site. ScreenApp runs on both Mac and Windows with voice input on every plan.
Who Uses a Voice Input App
Small business owners and sole traders answer emails, draft proposals, and update a website by talking instead of typing between other tasks.
Students take notes by speaking instead of trying to write everything a lecturer says. The vocabulary list picks up course terms once added.
People who find typing slow or painful use voice input as their main way of getting words onto a screen, whether that is RSI, a tremor, or limited hand mobility.
Writers dictate a first draft at speaking pace, then edit it by hand instead of typing every sentence from scratch.
Customer support and sales teams answer tickets and write follow-up emails faster by speaking the reply and cleaning it up afterward.
Mobile professionals away from their desk use the iOS and Android apps to record a client call or a site visit, then read the transcript once they are back at a computer.
