Record Your Screen in Chrome, Get an MP4

The ScreenApp Chrome extension records your screen, window, browser tab, microphone and camera, with system audio. Stop the recording and the MP4 file is ready to play, trim, or send.

The extension has a 4.1 rating from 71 reviews on the Chrome Web Store. It records the browser tab you’re on, your whole screen, or a single window, and can add your webcam on top of the recording.

What you get with the extension:

How to Record With the Chrome Extension

  1. Install from the Chrome Web Store: Search “ScreenApp” and click “Add to Chrome.” The extension icon appears in your toolbar.
  2. Pick a source and the audio: Click the icon, choose tab, window, or full screen, then turn on microphone, system audio, or both.
  3. Record, then stop: Click “Stop” when you’re done and the MP4 file is ready to play or download.

Recording quality depends on your computer and the source you pick. A single tab uses less processing than a full desktop capture with a webcam layered on top. If you need to record without Chrome open, ScreenApp also has Mac and Windows apps.

  • vs Loom: Loom’s free plan caps each recording at 5 minutes and adds Loom branding to the video. Removing the branding needs the Business plan at $18 a month billed annually. ScreenApp’s free recordings run up to 45 minutes with no watermark on any recording or export.
  • vs Screencastify: Screencastify’s free plan records up to 30 minutes per video but adds the Castify watermark; removing it starts at $7 a month billed annually. ScreenApp has no watermark on any plan.
  • vs OBS Studio: OBS is free, open source software you install on your computer, with no browser extension. It’s built for streaming setups with scenes and sources, which takes more configuration than clicking an extension icon and choosing a tab.

Who Uses the Chrome Extension Screen Recorder

Content creators record software walkthroughs and product demos straight from a browser tab, with narration on the same track as the tab audio.

Teachers record lessons and feedback on assignments from their laptop, so students can replay a class they missed.

Remote teams record a short update showing their screen instead of writing a long message or booking a meeting.

Customer support agents record the exact steps to fix a problem, so a customer can follow along instead of reading a list of instructions.

Developers record a browser bug as it happens, narrating what they expected against what the page actually did, and hand the MP4 to QA.

FAQ

How do I record my screen and audio in Chrome?

Click the ScreenApp extension icon, choose tab, window, or full screen, then turn on microphone, system audio, or both before clicking Record. Both audio sources mix into the same file.

Is the Chrome screen recorder free?

Yes. Recording is free to try, up to 45 minutes per recording, with no watermark on any recording or export. See pricing for what a paid plan adds.

Can I record Netflix or YouTube with this extension?

Netflix and other DRM-protected streaming sites block screen recording for copyright reasons, and no browser extension can get around that. Recording your own content, webinars, or non-DRM video works normally.

Does the extension support 4K recording?

The extension records at up to 4K, depending on the computer. Higher resolutions use more of your computer's processing power.

Where do my recordings save?

The MP4 file is ready to download to your computer after you stop recording. You can also open it in your ScreenApp account to trim it, get a transcript, or share it with a link.

Can I edit my recording after I stop it?

Yes. You can trim the start or end of the recording before you save or share it.

Does the extension work on Mac and Windows?

Yes, it works in Chrome on Mac, Windows, and Linux. For recording outside the browser, Mac and Windows apps are also available.

Real Results from Real Users

I have tried at least 6 different ways to transcribe meetings and get summaries: Notion with AI, HiNotes with HiDock as hardware, Plaud with different hardware, Teams agents. Every tool did a part of the job, but not one of them delivered on all my requirements. ScreenApp goes far beyond my expectations. It has the video ready if I need to re-watch a meeting.
