What It Reads, and What It Cannot
Here is the part that decides whether it works, and most chat-with-PDF pages skip it.
The AI answers from the text layer of the PDF. A normal exported PDF (from Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, a web print) has that text, so it works straight away. A scanned document or a photo saved as a PDF has no text layer, it is just an image of words, and there is nothing for the model to read. For those, run OCR first to add a text layer, then chat with the result.
Two more honest limits worth knowing:
- Verify anything that matters. Answers are grounded in the document and cite the page, which is exactly so you can confirm them. If you ask something the PDF does not cover, a language model can still guess, so check the cited page before you quote a contract or a lab result.
- Very long PDFs get chunked. A 400-page manual is split to fit the model’s context, so a question that depends on tying page 12 to page 380 can miss the link. Ask a focused question and it is fine.
