Participant 01

I started by looking back at my notes. Having everything in one place made it easier to find what I needed.

A Practical Workflow

From Recording to a Transcript You Can Analyze

Keep the original recording close as you prepare the text for your research.

  1. 1

    Record or Upload

Record from your screen, window, browser tab, microphone and camera, with system audio, or use bulk upload of multiple files for existing interviews. For fieldwork, ScreenApp records offline on iOS and Android and uploads when the connection returns.

  2. 2

    Transcribe

Get speaker identification and transcription in 100+ languages. Generate chapters with timestamps to navigate a longer conversation.

  4. 4

    Check and Export

Review the wording against the audio: clicking a moment in the transcript jumps the player to that point in the recording. Export your transcript as PDF, DOCX, TXT, SRT and VTT for the next stage of your analysis.

Follow a Question

Ask Questions Across Your Interviews

ScreenApp has one AI chat that searches and answers from every recording in your library, or a single folder. Use AI chat with any recording when you want to focus on one conversation.

Start with a question about what participants said, then return to the recording to check the wording and context. AI answers can be wrong and should be checked at the source moment.

Example
What did participants say about getting started?

Several participants described the first week as unclear.

  • 04:12Participant 02: "I was not sure where to begin."
  • 11:36Participant 04: "Nobody showed me the setup."
Where was the onboarding process mentioned?

Your Next Step

Choose a Tool

Start with the part of the workflow you need. For a closer look at transcription, see research transcription, focus group transcription or university transcription for lectures, seminars and research interviews.

Interview Recorder

Record an interview on your phone, in the browser, or on a video call and get a searchable transcript with speaker labels a few minutes after you stop.

Field Interview Recorder

Record interviews in the field on your phone, even without signal, and get a transcript with AI notes once you're back online.

Lecture Recorder

Record a lecture on your phone or in the browser and get a searchable transcript with AI notes a few minutes after class. Free to start, for students and educators.

Speaker Diarization

Upload a recording with more than one speaker and get a transcript that labels who's talking, with timestamps you can search and export.

Transcript Formatter

Paste a messy transcript and get it back clean, with speaker labels, paragraph breaks, and the filler tidied up. Built for the raw output of auto-transcription tools.

Transcript Cleaner

Paste a raw transcript and strip the timestamps, caption cues, fillers, and speaker labels, then merge the broken lines into paragraphs. It runs in the browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Interview Anonymization Checker

Get a list of the details in an interview that could identify someone, with who said them and when, then decide what to change.

Video Transcript Search

Paste a transcript or drop an SRT file and search it for an exact word or phrase. Every match comes back with the timestamp it belongs to, and nothing is uploaded.

Interview Quote Finder

Ask what a participant said about a topic and get the quote, who said it and when, so you can check it against the recording before you cite it.

Interview Theme Finder

Get a first pass at the themes in an interview, with the quotes and times behind each one, so you can check them and do the real analysis yourself.

Interview Comparison

Put the same question to every interview in a project and see side by side what each participant said, with quotes and times to check.

Focus Group Analyzer

Paste a focus group transcript and see how evenly people actually participated, who dominated, who was barely heard, and how much of the session the moderator filled.

Continue Your Analysis

Using ScreenApp with NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA

Prepare and review your transcript in ScreenApp, then export it as PDF, DOCX, TXT, SRT and VTT. Open the exported transcript in your coding software using a format that software supports.

There is no direct import integration with NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA. Check the receiving software’s format requirements before transferring your files.

See the NVivo Transcription comparison for the transcription options.

A Few Useful Answers

Before You Begin

Can I transcribe focus groups with several speakers?
Yes. ScreenApp has speaker identification. Review the labels against the recording, especially where participants talk over one another. You can click a speaker label to rename it, match it to a team member, or reassign a single segment.
Can I fix speaker names and technical terms?
Which export formats can I use for NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA?
ScreenApp exports PDF, DOCX, TXT, SRT and VTT. Choose a format your coding software supports and open the exported file there. ScreenApp does not have a direct import integration with these tools.
Can I ask questions across several interviews?
Yes. ScreenApp has one AI chat that searches and answers from every recording in your library, or a single folder. AI answers can be wrong. Check the relevant source moment before using an answer in your research.
Is ScreenApp SOC 2 audited?
Yes. ScreenApp is SOC 2 Type 2 audited, and the trust center lists its controls. Check what your institution requires for research data before you upload.
Does ScreenApp do qualitative coding?
No. ScreenApp does not provide qualitative coding or a codebook. You can ask the AI chat for first-pass themes with quotes to check against the recording, but the analysis is yours. Prepare and export your transcript, then continue in your chosen research software.
