What ScreenApp’s dictation does

ScreenApp has system-wide dictation on Mac and Windows. You hold a hotkey to dictate, then release it and the transcript lands in whatever app has focus. The hotkey can be Left Option, Right Option, Right Alt, Right Ctrl, Scroll Lock, or Fn/Globe on an Apple keyboard.

There are three modes: Fast returns the transcript exactly as spoken; Best removes filler words and fixes punctuation with an AI pass; Answer treats what you said as a question and inserts the AI's answer instead.

On Mac, ScreenApp’s desktop app runs on Apple silicon only, so dictation is not available on Intel Macs. Transcription runs in the cloud, so dictation needs an internet connection.

You can add your own list of names, jargon and terms and transcription applies them. Dictation is included on every plan, with no separate word limit.

Pick SuperWhisper if

• You need dictation that works with no internet connection. SuperWhisper works offline, so you can dictate without an internet connection, and ScreenApp has no offline or on-device transcription.
• You want to pick your model or bring your own API keys.
• You are on an Intel Mac. SuperWhisper runs on Intel Macs, though its FAQ says offline models only run really well on Apple silicon. ScreenApp’s Mac app is Apple silicon only.
• You want dictation on your phone. SuperWhisper has iOS and Android apps. ScreenApp’s dictation is on Mac and Windows; its mobile apps record audio for transcription.
